Are Wax Melts Safe for Cats and Dogs? A Careful Guide for Pet Owners

The short answer: wax melts can be used in homes with dogs and cats if you take sensible care. Keep the burner well out of reach, never leave a lit tealight unattended, keep the room ventilated, and give your pet a way to leave the room. We can’t give veterinary advice, so ask your vet first if your pet has breathing problems or is sensitive to fragrance. An electric wax melt burner removes the open flame.

If you love wax melts and share your home with a cat, a dog or a smaller pet, it is sensible to stop and ask whether the two go together. Our pets are part of the family, and their noses, paws and curiosity work very differently from ours.

So, are wax melts safe for cats and dogs? There is no simple yes or no, and no wax melt can be guaranteed safe for every pet. Many pet owners do use wax melts at home, but the main risks are practical ones: hot wax and burners that can be knocked over or touched, melts that might be chewed or eaten, and fragrance that may be too strong for a sensitive animal. Use a gentle amount of fragrance in a well-ventilated room, keep burners and melts well out of reach, never leave a burner unattended, make sure your pet can always leave the room, and stop using the melt and speak to your vet if you notice any sign of discomfort. If your pet has breathing problems, is very young or elderly, or is a bird, ask your vet before using any home fragrance.

This guide explains each of those points, with separate advice for cats, dogs and birds and small pets.

Why do pets need extra care around wax melts?

Wax melts work by gently warming scented wax in a burner dish so the fragrance is released into the air. That means there are three things to think about when pets are around:

  • Heat. A tealight burner has a small open flame, and the dish and melted wax get hot in any burner, including electric ones.
  • The wax itself. Wax melts are designed to be melted, not eaten. Bright colours and sweet, foody scents can make them look tempting to a curious pet.
  • Fragrance in the air. Cats and dogs have a far more sensitive sense of smell than we do, so a scent that seems gentle to you may feel much stronger to them. Every animal is different, and some may be more sensitive than others.

None of this means you have to give up home fragrance. It means using it thoughtfully, with your pet's comfort and safety in mind.

Are wax melts safe for cats?

Cats need particular care. They are agile, curious and love high places, so a burner on a shelf or windowsill that a dog could never reach may be well within a cat's range. A swishing tail can also pass over a tealight flame before you notice.

Cats are also very fastidious groomers. Anything that gets on their fur or paws, such as spilt wax or fragrance, is likely to be licked off.

You may have read that some essential oils can be a concern for cats. This is widely reported, and the PDSA, the UK veterinary charity, has a guide to cats and essential oils that explains its vets' advice, including keeping cats out of rooms where fragrance is diffusing and ventilating the room before letting them back in. If you have a cat, it is well worth reading, and if you are unsure about any product, check with your vet.

Practical tips for cat owners:

  • Think about where your cat can climb. Place your burner somewhere your cat cannot jump to or brush past, not on shelves, windowsills or mantelpieces they use.
  • Keep the door open. Make sure your cat can leave the room whenever they want, and keep at least one room in the house scent-free for them.
  • Start small. Use fewer sections of wax and see how your cat responds before using more.
  • Air the room. Keep fresh air moving while the melt is warming, and air the room afterwards.
  • Avoid using fragrance in the room with your cat's bed, food, water or litter tray.
  • Be extra careful if your cat has asthma or another breathing condition. Speak to your vet before using wax melts or any home fragrance.

Are wax melts safe for dogs?

Dogs are less likely to climb to a shelf, but they are often more likely to eat something they should not. A wax melt that smells of cake, cookies or toffee can look like a treat to a dog, and a wagging tail at coffee-table height can easily knock over a burner or brush a tealight.

Practical tips for dog owners:

  • Keep burners off low tables and the floor. Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface that your dog cannot reach, nudge or knock with their tail.
  • Store wax melts out of reach. Keep unopened and opened packs in a closed cupboard, and pick up any loose pieces straight away. This matters most with gourmand scents such as bakery and sweet fragrances.
  • Give your dog a way out. Keep doors open so your dog can move to another room, and keep their bed in a scent-free area.
  • Use less fragrance. Start with fewer sections, especially in smaller rooms, and keep the space well ventilated.
  • Ask your vet first if your dog has a breathing condition, is a puppy or is elderly.

If you think your dog (or any pet) has eaten a wax melt or any wax, contact your vet straight away, and keep the packaging so you can tell them what it was.

What about birds and small pets?

Birds are known to have very sensitive respiratory systems, so we would recommend speaking to your vet before using wax melts, candles or any home fragrance in a home with birds, and never using them in the same room.

Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small pets often live in one room or enclosure and cannot simply walk away from a smell they do not like. Keep fragrance out of the room they live in, and ask your vet if you have any concerns.

Electric or tealight burner: which is better with pets?

Many pet owners prefer an electric or plug-in wax melt burner because there is no open flame for a tail or whiskers to get near. That is a real advantage, but electric burners are not risk-free:

  • The dish and melted wax still get hot and can burn.
  • A burner can still be knocked over, spilling hot wax.
  • Trailing cables can be chewed or pulled, so route them safely out of reach.

Tealight burners can be used carefully in a pet-friendly home too, as long as they are placed well out of reach and never left unattended. Our guide to choosing electric, plug-in or tealight burners compares the options. Please note that we do not make the burners we sell, so always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions supplied with your burner.

How to use wax melts in a home with pets: a checklist

  1. Choose the right spot. A stable, heat-resistant surface, out of reach of pets, away from curtains and away from where pets sleep, eat and drink.
  2. Start with less. Use fewer sections than you would normally and see how your pets respond.
  3. Ventilate. Keep air moving while the melt is warming, and air the room afterwards.
  4. Leave an exit. Keep doors open so pets can leave, and keep a scent-free room they can retreat to.
  5. Stay with it. Never leave a burner unattended, and switch it off or put out the tealight before you leave the room or go to bed.
  6. Let it cool. Let the wax cool and set before you move the burner or change the melt, and keep pets away until it has.
  7. Store melts safely. Keep packs in a closed cupboard, out of sight and reach.
  8. Watch your pet. Notice how they behave while the fragrance is in the air.

What signs should you watch for?

Every pet is different, and some may simply not like a particular scent. Signs that your pet may be uncomfortable or irritated include:

  • Sneezing or coughing
  • Watery or red eyes
  • Drooling
  • Changes in breathing
  • Lethargy or unusual tiredness
  • Leaving the room, hiding or seeming unsettled

If you notice any of these, switch off the burner or put out the tealight, open a window, move your pet to fresh air and contact your vet if you are worried. Do not wait to see if things improve if your pet seems unwell.

What about other home fragrance?

The same common-sense approach applies to reed diffusers, room sprays and candles. Keep reed diffusers where they cannot be knocked over or drunk from, spray room sprays into the air away from pets and their bedding, and never leave a lit candle unattended. Our guide on where to put a reed diffuser has more placement tips.

Wax melts and pets: FAQs

Are wax melts safe for cats?

No wax melt can be guaranteed safe for every cat. If you use them, keep burners where your cat cannot climb, use a small amount in a well-ventilated room, make sure your cat can leave, and ask your vet first if your cat has breathing problems.

Are wax melts safe for dogs?

Many dog owners use wax melts carefully. The main risks are a burner being knocked over and a dog eating a melt, so keep burners and packs well out of reach and contact your vet straight away if your dog eats any wax.

Are there pet safe wax melts?

We would be cautious of any product described as completely "pet safe". How you use a wax melt matters as much as what is in it: placement, amount, ventilation and supervision all make a difference. If in doubt, ask your vet.

Is an electric wax burner safer with pets?

An electric burner removes the open flame, which many pet owners prefer. The dish and wax still get hot, and the burner can still be knocked over, so it needs the same care with placement.

Can I use wax melts in the same room as my pet?

Many people do, as long as the room is well ventilated, the burner is out of reach and the pet can leave whenever they want. Avoid using fragrance where your pet sleeps, eats or drinks, and never use it in the same room as birds or small caged pets.

What should I do if my pet eats a wax melt?

Contact your vet straight away and keep the packaging so you can tell them exactly what was eaten.

Enjoy home fragrance with your pets in mind

Wax melts and pets can share a home happily when you use a little common sense: less fragrance, plenty of fresh air, burners out of reach, a way out for your pet and never leaving a burner unattended. Watch how your pet responds, and if you are ever worried, stop and speak to your vet.
