How Long Should You Burn a Candle? First Burn Times, Burn Hours and How to Make Candles Last Longer

You light a new candle for half an hour, blow it out, and by the third evening a little crater has formed around the wick. Or you settle in for a film and look up hours later to find a tall, flickering flame and a very hot jar. Both come down to the same question.

So, how long should you burn a candle? The short answer is no more than 4 hours at a time. On the first burn, let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edge of the container, usually about 2 to 3 hours for our tins and 3 to 4 hours for our glass jars, and never more than 4 hours. Trim the wick to 5mm before each use, and stop when about 1cm of wax is left.

This guide explains how long to burn a new candle, how many hours to burn a candle in one go, how far down to burn a jar candle, how long candles last and how to make candles last longer, starting with a quick-reference table.

How long should you first burn a candle?

The first burn is the one that matters most. When you light a new candle, let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edge of the container. For our Fresh Linen Candle Tin and the rest of our tins, that is usually about 2 to 3 hours. Our glass jars, such as A Hug In A Jar Candle Jar, usually take about 3 to 4 hours. Whatever the candle, never go past 4 hours.

Why does it matter? Soy wax has a "memory". If you blow out a new candle before the melt pool reaches the sides, later burns tend to follow that smaller circle, and the wick sinks into a tunnel with wasted wax around the edge. So how long should you burn a candle for a full melt pool? As long as it takes to reach the edge, within 4 hours. Light a new candle when you'll be in the room for the whole first burn.

You may have heard the rule of thumb of one hour per inch of diameter. It doesn't suit every candle, so the label and the melt pool are better guides.

How long can you burn a candle at once?

For our candles, the limit is 4 hours per session. That goes for tins, glass jars and pillars alike. So how long should you burn a candle for each time? Long enough for the melt pool to reach the edges, and no longer than 4 hours. If you're wondering how many hours to burn a candle in an evening, think of 4 hours as the ceiling rather than the target.

Burning for longer than that can cause problems:

  • The wick "mushrooms": carbon builds up on the tip, so the flame grows taller and less steady.
  • More smoke and soot: a large, flickering flame can blacken the container and leave marks.
  • The container gets very hot: tins and glass jars both heat up during use, and longer burns make this worse.
  • The wax overheats: a very deep, hot melt pool isn't what the candle was designed for.

After 4 hours, put the candle out, let it cool and set completely, then trim the wick before you light it again.

How long should you let a candle burn after the first time?

Once the first burn has set the memory, you can burn the candle for whatever session suits you, up to the 4-hour limit. Ideally, let it burn long enough each time for the melt pool to reach the edges again. Lots of very short burns of under an hour are one of the most common causes of tunnelling.

How long can you burn a candle in a glass jar?

The same rules apply to a candle in a glass jar: a full first burn, then no more than 4 hours at a time. Glass gets hot, so place the jar on a stable, heat-resistant surface, don't move it while the wax is liquid and let it cool completely before you touch it or put the lid back on.

How long should you burn a 3 wick candle?

We don't make three-wick candles, but the same principles apply. They often reach a full melt pool sooner, so follow the maker's label for the maximum burn time and trim every wick before each use.

How long should you light a candle for the smell to fill a room?

If you're wondering how long to light a candle for the smell to come through, there is no fixed time. It depends on the room size, fragrance, airflow and where you place the candle. Most of a candle's scent comes from the melted wax, so the fragrance usually builds as the melt pool widens, and a small bedroom will often fill sooner than an open-plan living space.

To help the scent fill the room:

  • Place it where people sit, away from draughts and open windows.
  • Give it time to form a proper melt pool rather than lighting it for ten minutes.
  • Don't burn it past 4 hours to chase a stronger scent. For a larger room, choose a stronger fragrance or add a second, flame-free source, such as wax melts in one of our electric wax burners.

How far down should you burn a jar candle?

Stop when about 1cm of wax is left in the bottom of a jar or tin candle. Burning right to the base lets the container get too hot, which can damage the surface underneath. Our product pages say "around 1cm", which fits with common fire-service advice to stop a container candle before the last of the wax burns away.

When you reach that point, let the candle cool completely before you handle the container.

How long do candles last?

How long a candle is supposed to burn depends on its size, wax, wick and fragrance, and on how well you look after it. As a guide for our range:

  • Tin candles: 35+ hours of burn time. Our Smooth Oud Candle is one example. At 4 hours a session, that is roughly nine long evenings, or many more shorter ones.
  • Plain candle jars: the Amber and Sweet Orange Candle Jar has a stated 35-hour burn time.
  • Quote candle jars: burn time varies by jar and fragrance, so check the label that comes with yours.
  • Church pillar candles: our unscented 50 Hour Church Pillar Candle and 145 Hour Church Pillar Candle are rated for up to 50 and 145 hours in total. That total is spread across many sessions of no more than 4 hours each, not burned in one go.
  • Tealights: our Pack of 16 Tea Lights are 4-hour tealights.

How long do candles last on a warmer?

A candle warmer melts the wax with a heated plate or lamp instead of a flame, so the wax isn't burned away. Over time the fragrance fades instead, and how long that takes depends on the warmer and the candle. We don't sell candle warmers, so follow the warmer maker's instructions. Our guide Are Candle Warmers Better Than Candles? compares the two.

How to make candles last longer

If you want to make candles last long and keep their scent strong to the end, these habits make the biggest difference:

  1. Get the first burn right. Let the melted wax reach the edge so none is wasted down the sides.
  2. Trim the wick to 5mm before each use. Use a wick trimmer or small scissors once the candle is cool. A short wick gives a calmer flame that uses wax more slowly.
  3. Stick to 4 hours at a time. Longer burns don't make candles burn longer overall. They usually just use the wax faster.
  4. Keep it out of draughts. A flickering flame burns unevenly and wastes wax.
  5. Put the lid back on once it's completely cool. This keeps dust and debris out of the wax.
  6. Store spare candles somewhere cool and dark. Keep them away from radiators and sunny windowsills. Our guide to storing wax melts and candles has more tips.

How to make tealight candles last longer

Buy tealights with the right hour rating for what you're using them in, and burn them in a proper heat-resistant holder away from draughts. If you use tealights in a wax melt burner, our guide to what tealights to use for your wax burner explains why we recommend 4-hour tealights for most burners.

How often should you light a candle?

There is no set rule. You can light a candle as often as you like, every evening if you want to. Keep each session within the 4-hour limit, let the wax set completely before relighting, and trim the wick each time.

How do you burn a candle evenly?

Give it a full first burn, avoid lots of very short sessions, trim the wick to 5mm and keep the candle out of draughts. If your candle has already started to tunnel, our guide on how to stop candle tunnelling explains the causes and the safe ways to fix it.

How long do candles last without burning?

So, how long do candles last if not used? Unused candles don't go off like food, but over time the fragrance can soften and the colour of the wax may change, especially in warm or bright spots. To keep candles you haven't used at their best, store them with their lids on in a cool, dark, dry place, and, as our storage guide suggests, enjoy them within about two years of purchase for the best scent.

Candle safety while you burn

  • Never leave a lit candle unattended, and put it out before you leave the room or go to bed.
  • Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, furniture, decorations and anything that could catch fire.
  • Keep candles, matches and lighters out of reach of children and pets.
  • Tealights get very hot, so always use a proper holder rather than standing them on plastic surfaces.
  • Don't move a candle while the wax is liquid. If you do have a spill, our guide to getting candle wax out of carpet can help.
  • Put the flame out gently with a candle snuffer rather than water, which can make hot wax spit.

Always read and follow the safety information supplied with each candle. The London Fire Brigade has more advice on using candles safely.

How long should you burn a candle? FAQs

Is it bad to burn a candle for more than 4 hours?

We advise against it. After about 4 hours the wick can mushroom, the flame grows and the container becomes very hot. Put it out, let it cool and trim the wick before relighting.

How long should you burn a new candle?

Until the melted wax reaches the edge: usually about 2 to 3 hours for our tins and 3 to 4 hours for our glass jars, never more than 4 hours.

Can I burn a candle for just an hour?

Once the first burn is done, an occasional short session is fine. However, lots of short burns where the melt pool never reaches the edge can cause tunnelling, so aim for longer sessions when you can.

Can you leave a candle burning overnight?

No. Never leave a candle burning while you sleep or when you leave the room. Always put it out first.

Why is my candle flame so big?

A tall or flickering flame usually means the wick is too long or the candle is in a draught. Put it out, let it cool, trim the wick to 5mm and move it somewhere sheltered.
